The 16,000 SF project includes a new library, child and family educational center, historical exhibits, community meeting facilities and county offices. The plaza originally planned for the town by Juan Castro was restored, complete with a fountain from Castroville’s sister city Guanajuato in Mexico.

Castroville was founded in 1863 by Juan Bautista Castro, which gives the restored plaza its historical weight. County planning documents from the early 2000s describe the site as a single civic campus of about two acres: a library, a small museum and meeting room, a childcare and services building, public offices, and an outdoor plaza with a bandstand, fountain and walking paths. The library branch on the site is named for Andy Ausonio, a Castroville historian, builder and library volunteer, and is part of the Monterey County Free Libraries system.
